Trackbacks are essentially notification of a page being cited by someone. Often it also results into the original page giving a backlink to the citing page.
Trackbacks are just like links. If you for example copy a post from somewhere or may wanna reference it, you leave a trackback. Then the source website, if its a blog, would show that link giving the forum a backlink and possible traffic as well.
