I know it can be done and that there are various paid programs for it but I'm looking for some insight on what people have found to be worthwhile programs.

You don't want to send your click thrus to a counter page which redirects the visitor to the landing page. I have found that I have been able to get a good idea of what the content network is giving me by referring to my hosting provider's stats package. You can also use Google Analytics to help you.

    hi, Chris,

as Huligan says - you can track this through Google Analytics. The simplest way is to add tags to your content-network-advertised URLs.

There's a description of how to do that just here: google.com/support/analytics/bin/answer.py?answer=27254

    (sorry I can't link it!)

    I hope that helps!

I don't see how this shows the referring URLs for the clicks.

You can parse it from HTTP_REFERER.

The referring URL value is the &url paramater.

I track them with HitTails.com, only $4.95 a month. Helps me sift out the garabage real well.

I'm confused. Are you just trying to get me to click one of those sponsored links or am I just not seeing something valuable?

Chris, you don't need to buy a program. I do it by looking at my http access logs. If you are running a decent OS (ie Linux) this is easy to do with a 'grep' command (I dont know how easy it is with Windows). The content clicks include "pagead2.googlesyndication.com/" and this is followed by the url hosting your ad. You can then look at that site and block it if you think it is dodgy (see 'dubious clicks from the content network' thread).
