This should belie all the talk that the myriad of government regulations affecting almost every aspect of life is really there to protect you. They don't care, or they wouldn't let all these Chinese exports be sold with no concern for their safety.

It's not that they don't care, it's that there is no political or financial motive for them (those in the bureaucracy) to maintain a higher standard.

Which is precisely why Americans should be focused on a smaller government that handles sovereignty and national (not foreign) defense.

Of course the influx of low priced chinese goods has a lot to do with the problems with monetary system, but again, we let the government manage the money, we let them try to control quality and ultimately, we end up with poor results.

I laughed when I saw how Wal-Mart was complaining about how American's dollars are being stretched too thin, and complaining about the US economical problems, while they're buying so many chinese goods.

Buying from Wal-Mart is a bit like getting your dog from a puppy mill. There are all kinds of stories about how they treat their employees...which is nothing compared with what likely goes on in their suppliers factories.

Even though Wal-Mart might treat their employees bad (even though I haven't heard anything from my mom, a CSM at Wal-Mart), and they might import a lot of good from China, Wal-Mart saves the average US Consumer $2,300 a year. Thats a lot, when you think that the average US consumer has a -1% savings rate.

chinese companies. they've been having lead issues for a while now. i think they closed down several factories earlier this year because of it. A few of my suppliers in China have been hit with other issues. The copper being used over there is not of quality either, so I'm not able to get some products this season.
