Tough site to market/advertise

I have a new website, http://www.towntalkers.com. It is a classified ads website. I'm nearly finished with setting it up and would like to begin advertising it, but I am beginning to decide that it will be very difficult to get it going. It's hard to get people to post on a site that has nothing on it yet. I think once it gets going, it will be fine... but I need to get it going. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. thanks.

Well depending on how serious you are, YOU are going to have to post as much things as possible yourself. And while your selling off 100's of things call your mother in New york, and ask her to list a bunch.

A site like this will require offline promotion as well as online promotion.

You'll have to put your own stuff up for now. Ask you parents, relatives, family friends, etc, if they would post or let you post their things. Those bulletin boards in supermarkets? Maybe contact people who post on those and see if they would be interested in posting on your site as well.

Offline is very important, especially when you start this. But ask people you know. that's the best way to build content, and content is the best advertisement.

    Good luck!

Thanks for all the tips! I am going to start adding as much as I can and hopefully I will be able to get some others to do the same. I'm going to do some investing with Adwords to see what kind of outcome I can get. Thanks and let me know what else your thinking.

I like the idea of this site. It's kind of like Craigslist, but made by someone who isn't 20 years behind in web design. Definitely add your own content and get everyone you know to participate. By the way, I'm getting a PSA in your Adsense banner at the top. It pushes your content down and doesn't blend so well with the site design. I'd consider getting rid of it for now until you get more users on your site.

    Hi Shocka!

    Here are some advice:

Do as much advertising (PPC, link backs, ad placements, etc.) as you can within your budget after posting a decent number of entries to your site. Also do the conventional way of promotion on the web like submissions to Se's, ffa's, directories, email marketing - all of which should be free. Try searching for forum sites as well with similar niche and promote it there. Goodluck on your site! :)

Don't forget to make business cards with your url printed BIG. Classified sites need offline advertising a lot. This will help.
