Some of my friends mention torrent to be part of their IM campaign. Anyone here know how it work and what to do with it?

I would guess they pirate a bunch of files, put in their website information on the information page, and upload it to piratebay.org. I don't see it working well unless you've got a major entertainment site though.

Either that or they simply buy ad space on piratebay.org and other torrent sites.

Regardless of what method they use, it would be extremely untargetted traffic unless they run an entertainment site.

"Wrong, wrong, wrong.. there is nothing, absolutely nothing wrong with bt technology. If you are peddling an ebook for instance, it is a real boon to make a torrent of it and send it up the pipe.

Much like most of the threads I have read today, you folks have no earthy idea what you are talking about.

    Its a very sound idea.

Asking your friends makes the most sense to me seeing how they already know. Whats the point in asking strangers when you got the idea from your friends.

I have to agree with Nigel here - it's actually pretty sad to see threads that have 5-10 replies, none of which provide any valuable information what so ever.

As for the original question, the term torrent marketing is usually used referring to a black hat technique where you upload a torrent (whether your own or a "borrowed" one), market it, i.e. make it popular (you can either pick a niche that will generate buzz on itself or use shady techniques to fake the number of seeders/leechers etc.) and monetize it.

As for monetization, there's plenty of ways. As mentioned above, some simply ship the torrents together with files with URLs to their website (the least rewarding method if you ask me - unless your site provides a lot more of the same kind of material that you include in the torrent), others protect the torrents with a password and have the downloader actually visit their website to get the password. In addition, you can have the downloaders jump through a few hoops (such as fill in a CPA offer) to get the password. Options are actually quite endless.

I can't see "torrent marketing" being any kind of valid or ethical marketing technique.

I could see how torrents could be a great way to get your information in front of a lot of people. I've known marketers to create ebooks full of affiliate links and upsells trying to get a few sales. However, I don't think this works too well for getting sales because they are "freebie seekers" and not buyers. If you give them an affiliate link that they are interested in, they will search and search for a stolen copy.
