some are really good, if you find a directory for a specific industry that you have a web site related to, it can make a huge difference to have just one listing.

I agree with Will. I just do not know anyone who uses a directory for searching for information. There are plenty of good free directories with which you can list.

in real estate for example G has a huge filter. There are directories where agents get listed on their own page. Those pages have decent rankings for the area they sell homes and real estate/home/property keywords combined.

There are plenty of free directories, but the agressive marketer must target all of them.... That's what the competiitors are doing....

I've gotton accustomed to finding my competitors in the catagories I'm submitting to. Kind of fun when I accasionally find one where their missing... :D

The value of a paid directory comes into play when looking at it with SEO in mind. In my experience the paid ones generally have high PR and are seo friendly. They give your site a link on a page that has a good PR value and that will pass that PR to your site. This will boost the PR of your site and your placement in the SERPs.

WebGazelle: I don't think the PR value matters much. PR is how ever a refection of what really matters and that is inbound links. I call good solid directories Google-Blessed-Links. Google doesn't say its a bad thing to get links in directories.

From the directories we want to get traffic. But we also get link popularity and PR which is a reflection of the number of links you have and the number of links that the pages you have links from have.

The problem with free web directories that don't ask for a reciprocal link is that they don't have many inbound links (you can call it PR if you want to) and hence they don't get crawled deeply and your link may not be in the index at all.

Also Pay for Directories are now going to multi-links. MS's bCentral.com gives you 9 deep links with keyword rich anchor text.

I think if you have money get into as many web directories as you can and pay some one to add you up to all the free web directories. If you don't have money start with the free web directories and after you rank well and have sales do the other.

I look at PR as a way to tell me how important a site is to Google. Important meaning how well it has been indexed. If it has high PR then it tends to be well indexed and crawled by Google. Getting a static link directly to your site will no doubt get your your site crawled and indexed.

Multiple links is another benifit I forgot to mention.

WebGazelle: Well PR doesn't relate directly how well a site is indexed but it does indirectly. The more high PR pages (read pages will lots of inbound links from other pages that have lots of inbound links) you have pointed to your site the more often you will get crawled by the Googlebot and the deeper the crawl hence the better indexed. But real PR its self is a calculation that is probably done monthy and toolbar PR (scale of 10) or Google directory PR (scale of 8) are logarithmitic scales that reflect the real PR each page has. Each page starts with a real PR of 1. I would guess a toolbar PR10 page is around 50,000,000 real PR.

Guys I think you're missing an important factor, Alexa traffic...
What is the purpose of doing seo for our sites, to get good rank at se and get traffic, isn't it?
So let's look at this page..
Has it been crawled? nope, has it got PR? nope.
Is there any traffic (Alexa shows 727 for this site).
So probably if you look at your site statistics, you'll probably see visitors coming from this site (if you post your link here), so IMO when I criticize sites, I look at their Alexa ranking as well.
