Top Rank on MSN - how did I manage it? (I don't know myself)

I launched my first website in Febraury this year. Today I was analysing the site reports and used the top key word (plural and single) in the top search engine (MSN). I was 2nd and 4th out of 190,000 +.

Is this as good as I think it is?
    How did I do it?

The site doesn't have many links and I only registered it with 5 search engines.

I'm sure if I knew how I managed this I could do it again am I correct in thinking so?

Sometimes, it is better not to ponder excessively over things. Just be happy at the fact that you are currently no.1

Maintaining it can be the tough part of it, although you'll see real traffic boosts when you come to no.1 on Google. That won't be as easy to achieve mind you, unless it is an extremely vague keyword

Number of search results doesn't mean it is a competitive keyword, or if anyone even searches for it. Use the digital point keyword suggestion tool to see how many people are actually searching for the keyword.

You might be having a very relevant keyword domain and MSN seems to favor these domains. I hope that MSN is referring you a good amount of traffic :)

About 40% from MSN compared with 15% from google - most is bookmarked. Now could you answer my original questions?

what kinda site is it? porn? lol

i have a website design and development website and i have a pr5 on it...www.studio9designs.org

and i did some searchin in google and found http://www.studioninedesign.com/ there not me but i'm getting alot of hits...there a bigger company whereas mine is small...i get alot of work via word of mouth, not by SEO.

i did something right like with 1 way linking and a little bit of optimizing but other than that i got lucky with my domain name the way it is.

MSN has a different way of indexing. It appears that it favors sudden burst of links, then the ranking flops if another site with the same keyword obtains more links.

getting Top ranking in MSN is not that difficult. I have so many sites who are in top 3 with no or little efforts from my side but rank on 600-700 in Google. :(

But its always good to rank somewhere. :D

It's not really that easy to rank high in Msn. If you want to probe, Join an Seo Contest or choose a competitive keyword.

    I am guessing a few things here, but they are probably correct;

    • Uncompetitive keywords
    • You have your keyword in your domain
    • Your site receives little traffic from MSN

Could you give us the URL?

MSN is the odd one out of the big three imo. I have a friend who is ranking very well in Google and Yahoo and doesn't even rank in the top 100 for MSN.

On the flip side I have the number one spot for a pretty specific keyphrase for MSN and rank well beneath that in Google/Yahoo.

I guess the bottom line is most of us probably won't know the exact reason who your site ranked so well with MSN with a minimal amount of effort. I have seen this possible though with onpage optimization only on non-competitive keywords.

I'm still doing well on MSN but also doing better on google. I'm page 1 MSN (top 1 - 4) and page 3 google (top 1 - 2). Google has now overtaken MSN as the largest referrer. I still don't know how I managed it. Its a Microsoft Office Site, virtually no links and only a few manual submissions. Could it be content? Could it be my keywords? I'd be suprised if it were my keywords as I really didn't know what I was ding when I typed them.

I am doing Ok on MSN, a little worse on Yahoo and *ucki* awful on Google. I can't see any logic in this.

I've had a few of my sites in the top position, but its not been long term ones. Google has been more stabler when it comes to this.

    Just my two cents
