Just checked my seo progress and MSN loves me.

MSN - Im on the first page for all my key words. 5/5 major keywords

Yahoo - Mostly around result 30 but on first page for one 1/5

google - Not even present for 2! result 75 for another 2 and 18 best result.

Its a new site so I think Im right in thinking the google result will improve a bit over time. Still waiting on DMOZ which should help too, I hope. But what should my plan of action be? If the sites doing well on MSN does it mean the on page work is good and I should get link building to improve on the others?

Do the above stats say something obvious about what needs to be done and whats okay on the site?

I feel your pain on this. I have had this happened before, but what I've noticed is that if I get some good PR sites linking to my site the position increased in google.

    Well guys,

this is probably because MSN has around 13% (dont know exactly) market share so it tryes to have the best search results under the sun and i can say they really are fast at indexing. However, you will never get as good results with Google or Yahoo, because they are the masters and they wont just let some new, homebrew site into the best results. Work hard for few months and they you MIGHT feel better about Yahoo and Google.

Not good news right, unfortunatelly, it is the truth... :(

It just looks like MSN ignores price comparison sites, eBay lisitings and Amazon to me. Which looks like a big part of why Im so high on MSN. Why does google rate these comparrison sites so high? What lessons can I learn from them to get my site up there in google?

MSN gives a lot of weight for on-page contents - keywords, tags, etc. Google uses external links heavily for rankings. Also, the anchor texts are extremely important. Google doesn't seem to pay much attention to on-page content except whis in the title tag. Yahoo is somewhere in between, balancing both on-page contents and external links.

It is a great start that you are at the top of MSN for a new site. You will need to build more links for your site. It won't work overnight, but gradually your rankings will increase. Good luck!

Thanks mpls-web-design. What you’ve said is kind of what I thought, although being a "Grunt" I needed to hear it from someone else too. Thanks.

This is my plan/hopes for improvements on Google and Yahoo

That the DMOZ submission gets approved

A lot of keyword loaded anchor links already out there are indexed by Google (Until last week Yahoo didn’t want to know my site then I think it found some of these good links and hasn’t left my site alone since). As far as I can tell google hasn’t taken them into account yet.

Google to finish indexing my site or as much of it as MSN has. I’m hoping that once it sees all the content on the site then the value of the site as a whole will go up. Is that possible?

Then get going on making/adding links and writing some how toos & articles for the site that people will naturally link too.

SEO for MSN is often just short term, get good results in MSN, then move onto Google.. i go straight for Google myself, and the others just come together, but getting rankings on Google isn't a one day thing :)
