Top Directories that actually send traffic your way

As I already stated before, Directories are a great traffic source for Directories. If your website is not a directory then you'll have a hard time getting traffic from them.

EDIT: I edited the list to reflect all my sites combined rather than just one site so that all could be included.

Here's some of my top from my sites combined in order from most traffic to least... (Note: these reflect ads, homepage bids, etc. in addition to directory listings). All of these sites sent over 100 visitors to at least one of my sites last month.

NOTE: Banner advertising gives a large skew to some sites that is not reflective of traffic to the site.

I think bidding directories give the most traffic or featured links.

 

When it comes to traffic it comes down to how you market and promote
Last month we took 10 days in total for the Daily Listing on
http://www.alivedirectory.com/
And we got 140 Uniques that is 14 Uniques Per Day

Traffic is King and reigns supreme in the Directory Market

 

It would be interesting to see how this thread would turn out if webmasters not representing directories discussed traffic received. Folks using directories to get backlinks are naturally going to be interested in using the directory categories to find more potential sites to get listed.

IMO, it's a skewed perspective from what webmasters of non-directory sites can expect.

I've found that for my (non-directory) sites, the best directories for sending me traffic are the extreme niche ones (one category/page only types) and not the general directories. YMMV.

 

Now in terms of traffic for bidding directories, one must ask themselves, is it the 'directory itself' that brings the traffic, or 'the promotion' one has used in paying for that top spot.

 

Well you just never know what will happen...
If you look at Yahoo it is built around its directory to an extent and has other media attributes
that make it different and unique as a resource which sends different traffic threw diversity.
Also with all the new changes im seeing in the Industry many directories are turning into different
breeds so theirs potential for anything...

Guess we will have to think outside the box and be creative

Here is how I see directories becoming more than just a directory:

1: Directory - Main Objective -First stage and you will always be on this stage unless you add some major changes to your directory.

2: Search Engine (for example) and directory (second objective)- Second stage

3: A. Web portal (for current news or etc.) B. Search Engine C. Directory -Final Stage

At least that's how I see it.

The other day someone commented about making changes to the search feature and i think thats got a lot of Potential within its self
As well offer News and video that will be major resources of info in the near future with other factors that can indeed take the web directory forward
as more then just a directory but a new resource for the web.

Most likely are due to some form of advertising. I think it's still helpful to know which actually have the ability to deliver traffic (as in they actually get the traffic to send).

why would you submit to a directory to get traffic? You might as well set up a free blog somewhere, get a better quality link, and get traffic too.
