This the key. Don't spin your wheels trying to generate traffic if it doesn't convert. Experiment with different methods.

Thank you for your post. I agree that the majority of traffic will come from search engines. However, the methods of traffic generation that I listed are primarily used to get higher ranking within the search engines. SO, in essence we're talking about the same thing. Search engine traffic is hard to get if you're not listed in other places.

@Toby Twitter is basically used for communication, driving traffic, - you can also show up your followers in your blog (The same way you use rss readers).

I think camp185 makes a good point here. Sometimes marketers will get lost in using methods that are supposed to convert, but don't for every offer. If the methods not working for that offer you have, then back off, try a different method and don't get discouraged! Not every method will work the same way for every site you have. Keep that in mind.

1.) Article Marketing (submit 2-3 articles per day to at least top 20 directories).

2.) Forum Posting (make 5 posts to at least 5 relevant forums per day).

3.) Viral Marketing (don't forget about this one, this is still the most powerful technique if done properly)!

4.) Affiliate Marketing (let other people promote your products or services to their lists, make sure to offer a good, free affiliate program so people won't hesitate to join).

5.) Free and Paid Classified Ads (advertise to usfreeads, ebay's classified ads etc.. for long term advertisement).

Please note that I did not include SEO, it doesn't mean that it's not powerful for me, of course it is, and I just did not include it in my top 5 because SEO is a pain in the a** for newbies, we're providing quick and easy to learn strategies for newbies here.

Yeah there is a lot of free advertising, such a twitter and article submission. But i think people should master just a few methods of marketing, instead of a whole heap of different marketing techniques that if used will diffuse your initial intent.
