Top 5 listed for very competitive term - drops out of top 500 from time to time

    Hello,

Over the past four months I have had one of my sites that is usually in the top ten but mostly the top five for a very competitive term, however, every so often it drops from sight.

When I say from sight, I mean completely out of the top 500 results, it's still indexed in Google, just gone from the top few hundred for a while and then it returns.

I usually just wait for it to return now, because I have gotten used to it.

Can anyone tell me why this happens, if this has happened to them?

    Thanks,

This has happened to me and some other people I know so I know exactly what your talking about...The site will just come and go...and your used to it...

These are some of the things that I can think of right off hand before seeing the url of your website.

#1 - If you are just disappearing for one keyword and not multiple than it's easier to know if you are just "over optimizing" for that keyword. The over optimizing could be on your page or off your page. The on page factors could be your title tag, content, header tags, inner linking....and some off page factors could be your links coming in are mostly the same keyword for that page....EX: widget A, widget A, widget A change up your anchor text of your links coming in...

#2 That page just doesn't have enough links, trust, age yet to sustain its rankings. Try getting some Top Notch directory links to that page. http://dir.yahoo.com/ http://www.business.com http://www.botw.org http://www.dmoz.org http://www.joeant.com .....also point more links to that page on your website and off your website to gain more "juice"

#3 Google has soooo much data...if they have been doing testing, (which is mainly in the summer IMO) they are tweaking something...and when they tweak then you fall...

These are some things I can think of that has happened to me and some of my friends and how I remedied the problem.

Has anyone else had this problem or had it and remedied it?

    Thanks

Do your site drop to the last page of search results?

Anyway, in order to get a stable position in search results, you will need to build backlinks

It's happened to me with one of my websites, simply because of OVER OPTIMIZATION !!!

What i did to rank it up once again is to change some of the anchor text of the links pointing to my website which i already have access to, and replace them with mixed keywords and long term keywords... Then i have started a new linking campaign with different keywords in the anchor text pointing to the same site, And finally... It shows up in the SERP's and even in a higher position than before but that was a 40 days after the suffer of low ranking :(
