I've gotten a fair share of link exchange requests in the 2 years I've been online and some of the are really just a waste of time. So I sat down a wrote this article to share my thoughts on this topic: Link Exchange Mistakes You Don't Want To Make Feel free to comment here or on the blog...
I read your article excess of every thing is bad. Normal or natural link exchange is acceptable. Good Article
How to avoid link exchange mistakes? Simple. Use good quality automatic link exchange service, for example LinksJunk.com
I would consider the whole link exchange a mistake. It's all about one way links. Or 3 way link exchange.
And you are loosing possibilities, reciprocal links do help your rankings just as another kind of incoming links, unless they are excessive. http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=66356
You just use one of millions other methods such as linkbaiting or creating tools/templates with your backlink or cross-scripting your links in... etc
relevant linking is the name of the game, yeah. thanks for the blog post. i read it all the way to the end. can we exchange links now?
I hate asking around and link trading etc. when I first started out I made a lot of Splogs (did I say Splogs, I mean Blogs), WebRings and (my favorite) Swickis, then I linked the relevant sites to and from each other, now they're all PR4 and PR3s (apart from the Splogs which I don't work on anymore). Is it true that the PR is shared amongst the links ? And having links on non relevant sites can hurt PR ? Mmmmm maybe it's time for me to optimize the Swickis again.....
thanks for your good idea in your article, exchanging links always useful, otherwise no proof for the pr ranking
That can be very much possible for a blog which is regularly update or for a web portal, but what about small sites and businesses, maybe a custom embroidery shop or a small site selling lapel pins. They cant go on creating link bait articles, tools and templates. As far as I know, they wouldn't be familiar with what link baiting is or what kind of templates or scripts they can make to get links for their site, and those too related to embroidery and pins
I wonder: instead on exchanging links is it better to concentrate on create quality content which may bring you one way links and bake even more benefit ??
content is king, concentrate on making a good article, submit to digg, slashdot etc the rest will take care of itself
Then their ignorance is to blame. It like saying... If you don't know how to run, then crawl. If they don't know SEO then its their fault. You will never achieve any great results with nothing but link exchanges. ps: I did not mean link bait articles. I meant proper linkbait anyone creative can come up with. pps: Surely if they wont be familiar with directory submissions and link baiting and templates etc they won't even know what link exchange is either.
