Is there anyone that does a good job at submitting to the paid directories? It seems all the services are for submission to free directories.

Man, we did not make the cut? That's it, I'm closing down... Just kidding.

Nice list. Brilliant choosing an "A" name.

One thing I did notice in the list though is all the high PR 5 and up, and then there is one in there at "0". Seems a little out of place, nice looking directory though.

I actually visited a bunch of those dirs in the top 25 and aside from the high pr they are poorly structured, poorly designed and charge WAY too much. I think the list should be based on more than just page rank! Just my thoughts.

Yes, alphabetic can be nice when you're "Alive" ... but being at the top of the game and list regardless of alphabet is an even better kudo for Chris and some of the other directory managers.

There are some great directories there ... but being "best" is definitely a subjective term ;) - DMOZ - waiting periods, and subjective editors
    Yahoo - expensive

There are lots of good free directories out there too - NeO has a decent list over at his Directory Whiz

Is that what the list is based on then? PR? It would be interesting to delve more into what qualifies a spot in the top 25. I guess you have to take into consdieration multiple factors:

    PR
    Site Design
    Organization
    Cost
    Interal PR
Whether you are seeing actual referrals from these directories
    etc...

It would be neat if someone actually put together a site that listed/ranked directories based on a multitude of factors and ranking them both by those factors, as well as say a "users choice" ranking.

Someone should make a site like that. I know we don't earn any points on design, but that has been the last thing on our minds. I've tried to concentrate on organization, good SE saturation, and quality listings. The number one comment I get about our directory is that people have actually seen referrals from it.

It takes a lot of time to build one, and even more time getting listings, well ranked/indexed, etc.

That said, some build a site that ranks directories (I'm not talking about the "top directories" script. Something that takes into account more than just raw traffic.

    Anyway..

Nice list. I don't think I would include Whatuseek on a list of best 25 directories, since their directory has no PR. And I've never heard of RubberStamped or Umdum.

But I will add a few more high quality directories everyone should know about:

People have, I think there are several sites out there that let users leave rankings, or alternatively give an editor's view of the quality of directories and compare them based on several factors.

The trouble with most of these directory-comparison sites is they don't often achieve a critical mass of users to do the ranking. And although a few take a number of different measures to compare directories, I don't think any of them combine the results into an overall score, so you could have an easy way of seeing who comes out on top. A sort of DirectoryRank algorithm made up of all the different factors.
