Whatever ways you used for link building but make sure it should not look artificial, means search engine should not feel that your links are increasing gradually from unwanted & unrelated places. The natural increase in back links from related pages makes sense. Don't much worry about PageRank if you posting in blogs, forum etc. The crawling frequency of these networks are fast as copared to a normal site. Also do not use automated software to do link exchange.
