Top-10,000 Alexa site: $13/day from adbrite. Tips for generating more revenue please!

I run a fairly large vBulletin-based community site, averaging 500 to 1000 people online at any given moment, way over 140,000 pageviews/day and an alexa rank just under 9,000 (weekly stats are much higher, in the 6000s range) with most of the traffic coming from Japan, USA and Thailand (in that order, though it is an English-language community based site)

I only use adbrite (interstitials for guests only, no in-line ads, four banner zones) and my rates are falling. I am currently working on revenues in the region of $13/day

I have noticed that sites with similar or even less traffic are making more money, and I am curious what services would be recommended at this point.

I am by no means a veteran in this game, as this is my first real venture. I can cover server costs for two servers with the current revenue, but that's about it.

Also, can anyone tell my how my adbrite rates would be affected if I had another advertising company on my pages? (It asks if you use another service)

The thing about forums is that usually viewers are looking for something specifically or reading threads so there is a high level of ad blindness.

Can you run Adsense with revenue sharing to encourage more users to participate in the threads and boost your Alexa rank? That might work or even chaining Adtoll behind Adbrite. Never put all your eggs in one basket.

I don't think your Alexa rank would be affected with the ad company you choose unless that company prevents the loading of some of your pages and in turn affects your traffic.

I can't use google since the site, although not adult entirely, is riddled with adult content.

How does adtoll compare to adbrite?

oops, I meant how would by adbrite rates be affected. Fixed that now.

Whats your niche? Usually, forums are not that good with PPC but you can go with CPM ads. But again, choose the ad network which supports your niche.

Niche is japanophiles, pedophiles and japanese otaku. Also got a fair few expats from Japan who frequent the board, but most of the traffic is guest traffic.

I'm gonna go install google analytics in the board so I can get a better idea of things.

    I've set up an adtoll.

I'm not sure how useful this is going to be since they only pay by the click. So far I don't have any monetary reports to speak of though, so we'll see.

why don't you try with adult stuff then? I had a forum that I never moderated... consequently it was riddled with adult spam. I decided to redirect it to my adultfriendfinder page for some time... and made some bucks for doing nothing. Keep in mind that I REDIRECTED the traffic however.. completely bypassing the original forum. Since the forum had no real users no one really cared. You might want to use CPM ads if you have a real user base

    Hi,

Have you heard of Pay Per Play (PPP)? Basically, you get pay every time a 5 secs audio ads play on your site. The rate for 1000 audio ads played is $2.50-$7.50.

They are in beta right now and will accept all legit sites. You won't hear a lot of ads being play right now because they are still testing their tracking system. This could be really good for you in the future once Pay Per Play fully launched. I would just add their code right now because you have nothing to lose and a lot to gain.

Traffic is just people who visit, mostly people who show up more than once. Really annoying ads are really out of the question for me.

So far adtoll seems like a big nothing. I'll wait a few weeks when Alexa updates my rank to ~8000, and maybe I'll get more presence, maybe more people will sign up to advertise.

I'll sit on this for a while. Thanks though guys.

Any good CPM sites to recommend that have gotten good results in a setup like this?

I hear good things about tribalfusion, but I really don't like their TOS.
