Does anyone know how these tools that check a pages PR actually get their information? Do they use Google toolbar or is there a another way they do it?

They query the toolbar on different DC's.

Excuse me being thick but how do they do that exactly? Can I do it myself?

If you want to see some code, download a pagerank checker script from hotscripts or any other of the plethora of sites.

Thanks for the offer but I'm looking for ways to automate stuff of my own. Being a VERY rusty programmer (age 54 so the little grey cells are getting slow;) ), I haven't quite got my head round the best way to look up a Google PR for myself.

    Kind Regards, Gay

Be careful of it though. I believe you know this fact. Google does not permit automated queries. So if any of your parameters you send is going to be wrong, you'll immediately get an error message.

I got such errors when I tried doing the same PR checking code on the language of my preference. I stopped it immediately as I did not want my IP to get banned by Google.
