They create accounts on free blogs and web 2.0 site like hubpages, blog.com etc. Then will post articles to them with your links in the articles therefore creating backlinks to your sites. Not free mate, it will cost you hundreds of bucks to rent it, why rent? because you have to pay monthly for them.
