Too Much Too Soon

Does google penalise if you get too many links to quickly? or just devalue them? Like if you have a site already ranking for one term but start targetting another for example and aquire a lot of links quickly, could it hurt your existing serps? or just the new one?

Google doesn't like sudden changes. Same goes for links, too many too soon can hurt ALL of your SERPs.

Not usually. Otherwise all webmasters would be busy "building quick links" for their competitors.

However 1000s of links in a very short period (2-5 days), with exactly same anchor may trigger an alarm and Google may review the links.

if to many in a short time, google will devalue them. And, in time...they will gain their value again!

This is an interesting question. I used to think, build to fast, and it will trigger something (unless you already have established and good PR).

But then, http://www.bigweblinks.com/ came along. Went from the site not existing until around Feb 07 (I could be wrong), built thousands and thousands of links virtually overnight, and got PR7 with the last PR update.

    Any thoughts?

If you gain many backlinks in a short period of time google might see the links as unnatural links.

If you get too many links too fast you could be "sandboxed" for a period of time that is undetermined.

Then how come bigweblinks.com was never sandboxed, and is doing great in the SERPs? This is what is making me re-think this "too much too soon" theory.

I've had troubles with sites getting to many links to soon, I would try and keep the link reletive to your site and from other good sites and avoid site wide links, I've found site wides can often have a bad effect on your site.

Because the owner got a lot of high quality sites and authority links pointing at the same time when he did his promotion (hence he got a PR7). Very Good quality links can prevent your site from getting sandboxed.

I don't think you will be penalized. But I"m pretty sure that your serps will get affected, because based on the site that i have handled before, i put on too many links for 1 day, then after a couple of days, my serp's got affected.. my serps falls down!! after that, i learn my lesson.. and swear to never do the same way again! :D

    Very true....

So the too much too soon theory only "partially" applies.

If you get several quality high PR links, then you can gain as many links as you want without penalty.

    Hmmmm, interesting.

Affecting PR is one thing and affecting SERPs is another. Different things but related.

I don't think they do. It may not result in a sudden boast of SERPs but in the long term, it will definitly help.
Try to get as many backlinks as possible. Don't worry about what others say.

No. Though I didn't quite remember where I read it, it was someplace very authoritative. They DO punish that, so that some HUGE webmasters with dozens or even hundreds of strong websites CANNOT manipulate SERP in any industry as they want.
