Having too much content can also hurt your website in SE rankings in long term.

You should just go for quality content with a unique style in your writing. This will also help users stick to your site and forces them to come back.

I do think it's sort of true. Getting spam content on your site is going to hurt your rankings because it will dilute google pr and reduce google trust. It will also mean less repeat visitors.

It's really about balancing the trust of the site with the amount of content. The more google trust a site has, the more it can afford to put less quality content on there (affiliate stuff for instance). If your site is fully indexed and most pages get found in searches, creating a few (say 1%) affiliate pages within that niche will probably work.
If you are still struggling to get your pages to rank at all, focus on quality over quantity. Make sure everything is interesting and useful. Funny's good too (potential link-bait).

I have never seen any evidence that there can be too much content.

If its original then it doesn't hurt.
But content without backlinks has no value these days.

What i meant by too much content....

Some websites have added content covering wide varities of topics only to attract visitors from search engines for different keywords.

Some websites have huge articles greater than 1000 words which covers too many topics in one article.

If you know, how a full-text search engine works than you will know what iam talking about.
Google too uses some sort of full text search engine to index all the content.

If there is a content on a particular page which fits wide varities of topics than that page is added to too many keywords and may not fare well for any keyword at all.
Instead, if you had an article with reasonable number of words and which covers exclussively just one or two topics, then it has greater chance of moving higher up in the indexing and has greater probability to come on top in the search results.

The content should have a unique style and order. If it doesn't then it may confuse the full text search engine as it may a regular reader.

    On that note.

What is classed as not enough content.

If I have lets say 100 pages on my website and each page has only 50 -100 or so words, would that be classed as not enough ? Or would the total words on all those pages added together be sufficent.

    = 500 - 1000 in total (still not that much I guess).

Sorry, but think that just does not make sense. If there is alot of content on one page, G will just rank the various keywords used. True, it may not be able to compete with a site dedicated to 1 issue, but how do you define 'TOO MUCH'? If i had 1000 articles on 1 page, with 500 articles on SEO, and 500 on dogs. My page wld still beat a 200 article page dedicated to SEO.

It is just not logical for G to penalize me for having 'TOO MUCH' content if the content is good. Of course, that is the basic assumption, that the content is good.....

In any case, "too much" is a lot better than "too little".

When is too much too much? I don't think we can express them in terms of numbers. Content size is relative.

Perhaps he meant in 1 page?
Having too much text in 1 page, since Google doesn't completely index a page with thousands and thousands of words?
