Too many of my pages in index

For some strange reason when I search site:www.domain.com, G has been returning every page I ever created for my site. This started around Big Daddy, and I now have 10x more pages indexed than in the actual site. Then on a couple of the 64.233 dc's that were showing the different results from time to time, the amount of pages indexed matched my sites totals. My rankings were good on these sites. Today, all the dc's show 17,000 pages in the index (should be 1,200), and now I am back in the black Google hole. Almost all of the pages have been 404 for a year and a half, and they keep coming back into the index. I noticed the last couple of weeks that more and more of my pages were getting removed from the index and rankings went up. On Wednesday, half of the dc's showed 17,000 pages, a quarter showed the correct amount and the rest were somewhere between 7,000 and 11,000. Rankings were top 3 for correct dc's, 14-16 for middle dc's and 60's for the 17,000 page dc's. Today, Google multiplied my pages like bunnies again. It would appear that on the dc's that were showing the improved results, something unexpected happened and they had to hit the reset buttom.
FYI, I did submit a sitemap to Google, and it shows no errors.
