Too many links??

Just wanted to ask if anyone has noticed their sites penalised for getting too many backlinks in a short period of time.

There is alot of reference saying that getting too many links in a short while is looked upon as unnatural by the search engines such as Google.

I am curious as one of my sites recently launched a feature which resulted in getting aload of links from different sites within a week. It was a perfectly legit thing and the links just came from an optional request to link back to our site which alot of sites took up.

So, just wanted to discuss on this and also, how much and how soon is too much?

Tough question. But I think keep it on a normal pace. Yes, you're right you might trigger Google when you acquired lots of links very fast.

Too much links means doing it automatically not manually.

Surely, obtaining links should be automatic though. If its done manually then its not natural.

Basically from what I understand, the whole backlink thing is because Google thinks that the more sites that are linking to your site, it means that its highly regarded because other ppl are writing about your site.

The pace of which is not and should not be controlled by the webmaster.

I mean if we take an extreme - a site gets mentioned on a very major site like MSN NEWS or on TV or something regarding its interesting concept ... 1000s of blog writers adn webmasters decide its interesting too and immediately write about it linking back to the site. According to this too quick links accusation rule, that site will be penalised for this.

the question also remains, anyone have experience or know of the actual penalty effect and for how long?

generally its quite hard to get 1000s or millions of unique links. I would expect google to penalize sites for un-natural linking.. such as 10,000 links appearing only in directories with the same link text and surrounding text.

Appearing on news, blogs, directories, and in forums across the web over night with a variety of link text, and surrounding text generally wouldnt be considered spam, and shouldnt be penalized.

Hopefully this holds true for a new site i'm heavily marketing starting 2 hours ago

good question boldy*, the million dollar home page got thousands on backlinks in a very short time and went from PR0 to PR7. But probably it hasn't been penalized because of links from a lot of authority and reputable sites. A good number of the internet Big Boys linked the mdhp..
