What is the general consensus for going overboard on link buys?

What variables should be considered for this?

What are the effects, short & long term?

    thanks

If you are going to buy links then you should by them for the long term. I normally buy my links for months at time, it is better to pay for 6 months in advanced this way your link will be included in the next pr and backlink updates, plus it will give your links age which is very important when it comes to pr.

Try to avoid any strategy that would make your links look unnatural. If your site already has thousands of links, a few dozen new links do not represent a large percentage of your total links. For a new site with few links, 100 new links in a matter a few days would give give your site an unnatural spike.

Going overboard is if your site is new and thousands of links popup days later, don't go too fast

If you are buying links only buy QUALITY and never quantity.

By getting 5-10 Quality, relavent contextual links to your site you will be well on the way. Buy links for the long term - At least 6 months or longer if they are part of your SEO strategy, buy short term high-profile links for traffic.
