Too Many Keywords in Domain?

Discussion in 'Domain Names' started by PokerProfile, Jul 5, 2006.

I am setting up a site related to online poker (not an actual poker site), and registered a domain when I first started that consists of the keywords that I am hoping to reach #1 in the SERPS for, separated by hyphens (this much is fortuitous, I knew nothing about SEO then)

I am considering buying two more domains that form (fairly) obvious extensions of the domain I already have. Is this a good idea?

Hi , only spotted this now..

Im new to this whole SEO & Internet Marketing .. But what I have noticed is that registering a domain with your keywords , no matter how many keywords in the domain is a good idea.. ie I have looked at some keywords & sites via www.webconfs.com which has a great keyword playground & domain suggestor.

And I suppose you are as well to register the other domains as some other seo person will only do the same.

Now obviously domains with many keywords and hypens do not work for word of mouth or giving out your email address to someone but I can see the benifit from a point of view of SEO.. Its a definite start....

Make a search for your keywords and see what others are at...

Sorry If i havent given you much.. Have a look around the forum here and you should be able to get a guru to answer you :)

    Best of Luck !

Thanks. I registered the domains as soon as I thought of them, but I was hesitant to redirect them to my site because I was worried about being penalized by the search engines.

Next, how to convince DMOZ to update the blinkin' category (one that should be rather busy but hasn't been updated since May) and hopefully put my site IN?

The Search Engines WILL penalize you for having several domains pointing to the same website, product or service. At least Google will, as part of their algorithm is to check domain name owners, hosting companies, etc. They want to prohibit "flooding" by one company or individual.

If you are going to proceed with all poker related sites, I think you should have them owned by separate persons or companies from separate street addresses, and they should all be hosted by different hosting companies. Then link them all together and the links will have value.

Otherwise linking them together or redirecting them together will penalize you.

    Good luck!

If your domain falls in as a sentence which is commonly searched and it is seperated by hyphens, it might be great for SEO. If it either, is not having a sentence in correct english or the words would be in a wrong order, then you are on the wrong track

OK I received both good news and bad in this thread.

Yes, the domains are in the order I'd expect people to type in the keywords. I'd give them but I'm not sure if I'd be breaking the rules.

However (apart from one) they are all from the same domain registration company. I paid the extra for the private registration feature (can't stand the idea of my personal details being on whois) for all of them, so I'm not sure if name, street address etc. come into it. I don't intend to have lots of poker sites, just the main site at the primary domain. I intended to redirect all of the other domains to that one site. Are you saying that this will lead to being penalized?

I'm considering also having a separate gateway site on a separate host with the one domain I registered with a different registrar (again private reg.), so I can try some greyer promotion (specifically, I want to make a viral ebook and distribute it on eBay and P2P, and link it to the gateway site that will then link to the main site).

What about redirecting the other (SEO) domains to my site's companion blogger blog instead?
