HAHA good luck! its wishfull thinking, in the 1900s England was the richest, strongest, most educated nation in the world. Shifts happen, they belived the empire would last strong, and now they think the UK will stay rich...

    What he means is that the people who actually do the work must work harder, i.e., not people like him and his friend Bush et al. They are the ones who have set about deindustrializing their own countires in the name of the "service economy." They seem to want serfs and a leisure class, with little in between--just like the good old days.
