I often see folks posting websites in various forums that have just recently been launched, has had no advertising, yet have hundreds if not thousands of unique visitors on their first month. They can't ALL be pulling everybodies' legs because it happens so often. But how does this happen?

well this is how the advertisement goes,at first everyone will visit your site just to see how is it,and if they think its worthful, then site will continue to grow if now then site visitors will decrease for sure.

That's the question! I wish I knew the answer. Read 'The Tipping Point' there's some good information in there about what makes something become an epedemic. I'm only about half-way through it so it hasn't happened for me yet.

I think the biggest tip is to become a shameless self publicist (like posh spice!) or if you know someone that has lots of friends (a 'connector' I think the book calls them) then ask them if they can spread the word for you.

This is due to pulling traffic from other sites they own or teaming up with friends for link exchanges or they know how to use social bookmarking well to get traffic. by utilizing digg, stumbleupon etc..

Its actually because, they own other sites, which have traffic, which gives traffic to the new site, with just a single link,
or, they buy the traffic, like, autosurfers, etc. (useless in my opinion)
or, there site, is exceptionally unique- i.e. it is a superhit from the very first visitor.
Please green me, if you like my answer. :)

Getting huge traffic and fast can be done by the "help" of social networks like stumble, digg, etc. as people allready mentioned, but from publicity also.

If you have a cool site and write down a good press release about it (or hire a profesional copywriter to do it) it can really make miracles, as there are many publications that could send thousands of visitors to you in manner of time.

It never happened to me (not yet) but I know that it works.

Press release is something else I hear alot about. What exactly is a press release and how and where do you go about doing this?
