If your mouse without USB, I assume your mouse use PS2 port. Try to unplug and plug again your mouse port with computer. Usually for PS2 mouse, after unplug, you have to restart your computer to make can work again.

How old you mouse is? May be it is time to replace it.
I would like to recommend a USB + Laser mouse, because optical is also an old one these days.

You'd better firstly unplug and plug your mouse from the PS2 interface and then check whether it is ok. Reset your computer if necessary. If all of these don't work, you can borrow a normal mouse to check whether there's something wrong with the PS2 interface. If not, do not hesitate to buy a new mouse to replace the bad one.

I agree, unplug it and check connection, plug it back in and reboot the computer, if it still doesn't work then consider a new one.

    Good luck

What sort of mouse is it? If it is an older ball mouse, then take away the ball congregation and pull out any dust and cream that has erect up in there. If you're a keener, you be able to take the entire mouse separately and eliminate any cream that has drop inside too.

If you're use a latest optical or "'Lazer'" mouse, then there could be quite a few troubles. Make certain that not anything is wrapper the base of the mouse (such as a piece of tape). Also, try using the mouse on a different face such as a mouse pad or a piece of paper.
