Don’t anybody think that www in front of the domain acts as some sort of a subdomain. Therefore using URL without it is more proper?

I guess my big reservation is that whilst most people when typing in a URL these days start with the old www that is not to say in 3 - 5 years the average internet user might become a little more tech savvy and realise that the www isn't a requirement.

So does anyone see the use of www fading out with time?

It is a subdomain...the www was simply a host name for a web server. It has been used since the advent of the internet and there is nothing wrong with it. It really comes down to a matter of choice...but there is absolutely no SEO implications. Just pick one and stick with it.
