To VPS or not to VPS ?

Discussion in 'Site & Server Administration' started by PPCInformer, Oct 16, 2008.

I have a shared host with GoDaddy and I have a wordpress site, get around 6-6.5k UV a day. I was wondering if there is a need to switch to a VPS . I am not sure what are the advantages of switching to it. so was looking for some advice. ( My site has been getting steady inc in traffic so down the lane it might be an issue )

apparently on Godaddy we can get 50 simultaneous MYSQL Database connections on shared host. what does this mean is it like only 50 users can simultaniously exist or something ?

also whats the learning curve from going to a shared host to a VPS? I did some snooping around and found HostGator seems to be a better choice. Every one seems to like their support. With Go daddy we get copy paste solution most of the time. ( Is it the same there @ HostGator )

    TIA

A VPS is the way to go if your expecting large amounts of traffic and you have more than one page to maintain. I have got two VPS's with godaddy and I would only use shared hosting again if it was for a small page. It's up to you to decided if it's affordable but imo godaddys package is the best out there.

Thing is what OS are you going to use? a Linux based OS or a Microsoft OS? A Linux OS is the gold standard for web hosting but if you have no experience with linux you might find yourself out of depth prity quickly.

thanks for the input mate, I dont have much experience with linux but I can work out most of the things as long as its not too extreme..

what kind of traffic would generally be too much for shared hosts ?

Erm well it think its down to bandwidth mate, if it's just simple pages that don't require tons of bandwidth a VPS will handle prity much anything you have. What type of page an bandwith constraints do you face?

Oh and if you need a hand with linux give me a shout I am working my way towards announcing my own distribution in the near future so you can say I have a fair bit of experience with Linux :D

Sure, to get VPS. It allows you to customize web hosting environment and to run your own OS. It is a good idea to spend some time learning different virtualization technologies. I would suggest you to choose betweeb Virtuozzo Containers, VMWare and Xen.

If you are indeed expecting a steady ongoing increase then I am for VPS too.
Please note that in some sense you will be responsible for most technical issues, many which you were used to do with just a click in CPANEL. so make sure you know your way around.
Also make sure that with the VPS some one is doing backups. either you or them.

    BTW
Not exactly, each user is using the DB for a very short time, maybe mulliseconds. so for any moment in time you can have much more than 50 active surfers

Do you know how to manage a dedicated server?
VPS is just like owning a dedicated server. You get full root access and you get all the things you can find on a dedicated server.

Do you know how to setup apache, php, mysql etc on vps ?

It will be a tough learning curve ..but worth learning if you are interested.. if not, you can hire a management company to help secure/optimize and monitor your vps for you.

Select a host that provides management inclusive (or purchase it extra), or use a company like Platinum Server Management.

    Hope that helps,

Think twice if a company is offering unlimited bandwidth for VPS..

No one can offer 'unlimited' in this market. Even they do, they gonna kick you out when you hit their limit.

Mxhub basically nailed it. If you see Unmetered bandwidth at 10Mbits, that's pretty possible (but realistically expensive). Anything below $100/mo should be avoided. If you see Unmetered at 100Mbits, exit, quickly.

The bandwith issue varies from host to host I know one that will give a 500gb monthly for £17.74 a month an another that for the same price will give me 5000gb so it's a catch 22 situation most of the ones that offer more bandwith for less are normally a pain in the ass to deal with when it comes to uptime an support issues.

A good friend of mine had a VPS that the physical box it was on died, they where suposed to get the hardware replaced and up within a hour and the Virtual Machines imported a short while afterwards, guess what? it took them 2 days to get the box set up an another day to import the VM's all 4 of them. This was about 3 years ago an i doubt the host is still around but he was paying the £50 a month for it and lets just say he is now with a far far better host.

Like all things you get what you pay for. But if you still need assistance with linux I will be more than willing to help you out mate as Linux is a real passion of mine.

I knew I'd seen it somewhere....

    Godaddy Vps:
    http://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/hosting/virtual.asp

You have 3 tabs, 'ready-to-go', 'build-your-own', AND 'ASSISTED SERVICE PLAN'.
You can then choose linux, or windows.

Im not sure if their 'assisted service plan' is exactly the same as a 'managed' vps but you do get:
    • Initial Server Setup
    • Security Services
    • Emergency Services
    • Patching Services
    • Monitoring Services
    • Custom Support Access

Anyway, Hope that helps you out!

    Hi,

Generally I recommend a VPS to my customers when they need more control over the environment than on shared hosting. e.g. Custom software, Settings, etc.

If you get a VPS tuned just right you might get a little bit better performance out of your site using less resources. If your provider is saying your using too much CPU, bandwidth, IO, etc then your account probably won't do much better on a VPS and you should be looking at a cheap dedicated server instead.
