To take the plunge or not

    Hello fellow DP'ers :D

After much reading of all the helpful posts, and doing a good amount of homework, I have researched and found a certain niche/keyword for a certain sporting goods product that sells in the $300 to $500 range.

I have developed a BANS site for this particular item. I have took my time, developed what I feel is a nice looking template.

Here is where the questions start: :p

The keyword for this product regularly goes for 50 to 65 cents on Adwords, sometimes as high as 80 cents. For those in the know and who have the experience...could this be profitable? Paying 50 to 60 cents per click to my BANS site, and then having the user click to Ebay to make a purchase of $300 to $500. Sometimes more or less. I am not really sure what type of commission I can expect from Ebay from selling these. Just curious what other people's experience has been? I know Adwords can be a black hole if you don't know what you are doing. For those who have CJ/Ebay/BANS with Adwords experience...any insight/experience/help is appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

I would try Yahoo (YSM) first.. keywords are much cheaper, and that'll get your feet wet. Also MSN is worth a shot. You won't get as much 'action' as AdWords, but you'll be able to craft good ads, and see what people are clicking on. When you know what you're doing and what people are buying, you'll be better prepared with AdWords.

These are just my thoughts.. I'm still learning as well.

Ebay pays you a percentage of it's fees (which would be $13 for something around $300, so if you spend $10 on 20 visitors and get 1 purchase, it would be worth it to do it largescale.

The question is: can you convert 5% of all people who visit your page into $300 paying customers?

If you make $15 per sale and it takes 100 clicks on your ad it would cost you $50 to make $15. Not sure how much amazon pays for the sale i know electronics are 4% and others are higher. I just took 5% as example and figured 1 sale out of a hundred clicks.

You would have to make a sale every 20 clicks to make money or every 30 clicks to break even at 50 cents a ad.

BANS might not convert as well as specifically tailored, custom created niche pages (with other aff programs as well as ebay).

I'd shy away from Adwords in this case, at least until you can see how well your BANs site converts with Yahoo or MSN. You'll be taking a cut of eBay's small cut of that sale, so you'll really have to convert well, which can be very hard when the product is so expensive. How much does this product retail for? What percentage of the auctions for this item in that $300 - $500 range go unsold on eBay. If it's a hot market and eBay's prices are a steal, then this idea might have a chance of working. Otherwise, you're at a big risk of losing money.

Thanks everyone for their responses. I am leaning towards backing off the Adwords. I am going to try my free $50 credit on Adcenter out and see how things go. Probably invest some time and energy into SEO for this site.

BANS = http://www.buildanichestore.com/ . Not worth it in my opinion, most people who I've seen use it just lose money since they don't know what they;re doing. That doesn't mean it's a bad product, though - just don't expect BANS to instantly start making money for you without work on your part.
