To put a picture on a website. Do I need to host it on the internet first?

I found a picture on the internet saved it to my desktop. Named it MCDS.

Then i wrote in the script MCDS.jpg, and it worked fine.

I tried it with a picture I had on my computer that has not been hosted on the internet and it did not work. That is why I ask.

For your picture to be available for display on a web page it has to be hosted on a server. If you dont have hosting, there are some free image hosting sites you can use (photbucket for one) for pictures you want to display.

I do not have a website yet. I am just now learning how to use html. So I am just practicing by using wordpad and saving as page.html. I am having fun playing with this stuff. I have learned a lot in just a few hours. Before I go spending money on a domain name and a host I want to get fluent in html and css.

    Gdutchm,

I ran into the same problem when I first started teaching myself html way back in the day. The reason why your image is not getting displayed when you upload your page to the internet is because the link calling your image is still calling a local file.

What you need to do is, upload the image to the internet and then link to the online version of the image.

since you don't have your own hosting, go to: imageshack.us/ and upload you picture there, on the following page scroll down and copy the url next to "Direct link to image"
this is the link to your online version of the picture.

Then open up your pages source code and replace the link in the img tag.
It should have something like this img src="c:\

replace it with img src="the link u copied

    Hope this helps!

you can create web page and link images on your computer.
but if you want to show your website to the world you will have to upload the html page with the picture on a website.

this website can be free or paid it all depends on you
