I have a vps and currently have cpanel which is $10 per month. What advantages and disadvantages are there to either keep this feature? all the websites are mine so i dont have to worry about customers..thanks
Depends on whether your hosting is managed or unmanaged. If it’s managed, then you shouldn’t have to worry about having cpanel. If it’s unmanaged, then it might be a good idea to keep it. This way if you need to manage website files or email accounts you can do it yourself without submitting a ticket to the hosting company unless you have the admin. skills. In the end, it depends on the level of service that you receive from your hosting company.
Scott's answer is pretty much spot on. If you are just looking on saving money, you could always try Direct Admin, though that would only save you $5/mo. or so. There are other free panels out there, but their security and reliability is seriously questionable. If you can afford the $10, it's worth it for being able to manage your sites easily.
In my opinion, it is better to pay 10$ per month and have a reliable control panel installed on the server( with all the necessary services). Having a control panel installed on the server, you can manage all your domains and email accounts just within one control panel. So, control panel is a necessary thing if you have hosting.
It is easier to manage your VPS with cPanel and most of hosts provides cPanel hosting, so web site transfers can be done easily. It is the most popular and reliable control panel.
I do like the easy access I have with cpanel, but since I don't buyand sell websites as much as I used to, it may make economical sense to try it without for a while
if all of your websites is for you and the VPS stable you can neglected it and not pay for it. and in the future if you need it you can buy it no problem
Yea, all the websites are mine and rarely do i ever login into a cpanel..sometimes when i add text links on one of my html websites, but thats about it
you can use FTP program in this way and download your files and edit it locally then upload it again, this not problem and The final decision for you.
If you don't want to pay for cPanel license, just buy a server with free control panel, for example some hosting providers offer ISP Lite control panel for free when you order their server. Fastnext company is one of those hosts.
I am using a managed VPS, but still I like using cPanel. It makes it very easy to manage files, adding sub domains, managing email, database, creating backups etc. I can do those simple things myself rather than spending time creating support tickets to the hosting company. In my opinion if you have multiple websites then having cPanel is worth the money.
Cpanel makes your life easy as it comes with loads of features such as awstats, fantastico, you can manage your email accounts and multiple websites with ease.
Ok, let me ask you a question instead. What are you going to achieve shedding off cPanel ? What are you trying to achieve, is just an effort to save $10?
