    My recommendations

    • request a non-commercial category that you have a significant but non-commercial interest in, that doesn't have many listings or that looks neglected (that's your value judgement since you know about the topic)
    • find 3 great sites that are not listed in the directory that fit in the category
    • write great listings for them
    • be honest in your application about any sites which you control.

Once you are accepted work to add more sites to your own category, to your bookmarks and submit elsewhere. I scraped a local web developers portfolio for 400 sites that hadn't been submitted and spent time working out where to place them. Quite an education.

Make sure you list your affiliations after you have been accepted.

Then once you've "done some time" request other categories including those you may have a vested interest in.

It might help to learn to call it "ODP" or "DMOZ" instead of "OPD", too.

I'd recommend spelling the site right before applying as an editor.

Well, at least I had the same thought as Minstrel - too little too late ;)

If English is not your first language, it might not be a good idea to apply to edit in an English-language category.

The meta editors who review applications look for editors who have the language skills needed to write a good category description in the language of the category (copying meta tags and copying the first sentence of the site don't count). Unfortunately, this is not easy to do if you are not fluent...

If English is not your first language, consider applying for the opportunity to help Dmoz build a language-specific directory in your primary language, with websites and directory listings in that language. Some of the language categories at http://dmoz.org/World/ are growing very quickly -- helping to build those categories can be a gratifying experience. If your language is not there, you probably have a patriotic opportunity -- to promote your language on the Internet by helping to build a category for it. See http://dmoz.org/Test/World/ for opportunities to help build categories for Urdu, Georgian, Sinhala, Sami, and many other languages.

Editors who have start in World and learned about the directory there often find it easier to apply for additional English categories later. :)
