I look at it this way most people are familar with .com than any other. Say they remember your name but you have .info and they type in .com You think that person will go to find .info you just lost a visitor. So I would keep domains as .com copper we are on the same level
Go with .com as the user will type it in like that. If you can get it, that's what you want, for various other reasons. If it isn't available, though, in most cases, .net is just fine, and ANY domain or subdomain is good if the content is good.
The problem is that the general public, in the US anyway, is accustomed to .com, or maybe .net (though .net and .org aren't nearly as well regarded). Offbeat domain names sound ... offbeat and suspect. Your main domain should be the one that people expect it to be. In the US, that's probably .com. In France it would be .fr. If you want to appeal to an international audience, .com is probably best.
