To ask or not to ask?

I was wondering how (or whether) to approach someone whose domain I would like to purchase. It's a dot com domain for a site that I have the same dot net domain registered. The domain name is probably worth no more that $20 (USD), but I'm worried by contacting him I'll artificially drive up the price. It's set to expire in December of this year. Should I just wait it out until then and see if he renews it?

    Thoughts?

    Thanks in advance.

Offer the registered owner $20. Do not ask how much they want for it. History tells me the registered owner will inflate the price. If all else fails, back order the domain and wait. I was lucky enough to get 2 domains I wanted for the $18 x 2 back order fees versus $200+ that one previous owner wanted for a domain.

Even if it's set to expire in Dec, there's no guarantee you can get your hands on it. Best to ask now.

Yes, that would be the good deal. Offer him $20 and ask him straigh away.

I backordered it, I'm going to wait until December and then offer $20 if he does renew it.

    Thanks for all the input.

Does the .com site have any developed site attached to it? A lot of times, it's better for you to make an offer for the .com before you register the .net or any other extension of the same name. This way, the .com Registrant doesn't get the impression that you are cornering their potential market. It can be seen as a potential infringement by the .com Registrant. Not cool! I actually had a multi-billion dollar company do this with one of my names in 2000. They ended up buying my .com name of their registered .net of the same term for a LOT of money! Their mistake was very expensive for them, indeed! That's how I got into this domain racket in the first place. If your name is not a "premium" keyworded domain name, make them a quick offer. Especially if there's been no development on the .com name, they really couldn't try to drive up the cost unless they've developed it to some extent to make it valuable. Most Registrants will love a quick couple of bucks. There are relatively few really good domain names available that people are actively marketing/advertising for sale. So the only way to get one you want is to just make an offer for it. Good luck!

Go for it. If you only think the domain is worth $20 then is it really going to bother you that much if you end up paying $40 or $50 instead? It's not really like you think the domain is worth $20,000 and if you don't play your cards right you may end up paying $40,000 or $50,000. The multiple is the same but no need to over analyze all of this...

You should wait until the domain is expired after 7 day then use backorder service coz there is a risk where the buyer will extent the domain if he find out that there is someone backorder it.
