    stop following the spam bots
a very simple fix that most are to lazy to enforce
I follow a few thousand people and never see spam in my stream, because if I see an update that looks like an RSS feed or trying to sell me something, I unfollow them!
I know, it's amazing incite, you can do it too

So why do you have spam in your stream?
Why aren't you taking full advantage of the monster that is called Twitter

easiest way to stop the spam is not to auto follow people. I always manually follow it cuts down on a lot of spam

Here are a few Twitter tools I use to manage my followers
It's just annoying reading some of the replies of people saying twitter is crap and full of spam, it only gets full of spam if you follow the spammers ;)
If you want a good list of people to follow, you're welcome to follow all my friends, I try to stay on top of it and remove the spammers.

It's not quite as simple as that. I certainly don't follow spam bots - but I do get fed up of seeing dozy chicks spamming their titpics in my followers list every day - and if you've ever tried to follow a current story in trending topics - oh my! the spam that turns up there by the dozen is infuriating

Seconded. I always review a follower and decide to follow them or not after reviewing their account. Afterwards if they spam, I just drop them and never worry about it again.

The spam and the identical tweets from numerous people make following trending topics very annoying. I wish there was a tool to filter out duplicate messages as in show them once then group the rest rather than filling the stream with them.

    please stay on topic..
exactly, I'll check the users to see how many replies they have, and if every post is a link to their site, they don't get added
Have you tried using tweetdeck? I know it has a couple filter options
I don't really pay attention to the trending topics, why do you?

I use tweetdeck but the filtering of columns only allows a single filter at a time and it needs to be applied manually. I follow trending topics for news stories, for example I was trying to follow the iran election topic.

It's always a good idea to follow targeted niches to begin with. OP is right in that you have to weed out the bots as you build your followers or an account/campaign will be nearly useless (of course it depends what you're using Twitter for)

Another handy tool I like to use is Hootsuite. It's a solid choice for account management.

If you follow these tips on when & who to follow back on twitter I am sure you will have a good experience with Twitter.

The bottom line is that "don't use softwares to follow/unfollow people".

I actually keep some spammers in my list. I find new niches, new tactics etc.

    Spammers are sometimes useful.

And remember. Twitter is your Friend :)

    Hah.
There are millions of twitterers out there who have RSS feeds connected but also do not spam and have conversations with people all day. Pretty unfair to them what you're doing.

Like as if seeing an RSS feed post, will god forbid make you suffer the torment of seeing a ~50 pixel high, 140 characters of your giant tweet deck or twitter homepage screen. My goodness, your screen must be so valuable.

I understand its perfectly normal to unfollow, spammers, who just put up RSS feeds and just spam with useless things and sound like infomercials... but RSS feeds, come on.

Then they should do what I did and make another account for their feed
If I follow you and you're obviously using a feed to send your updates, you're gone ;) (even if you post manual updates and reply from time to time, if 90% of your updates are a feed.. guess what)
Twitter is about networking and conversations.. how many conversations do you have with an RSS feed??
