I need titles of typically english/british music, that americans in particular would more or less easily recognize it as british and associate it to britain. Not just the national anthems! Thanks very much, I am quite in a hurry, so the sooner the better!
Anything beatles or monkees... have you seen Austin Powers 2: The spy who shagged me? just sample from their soundtrack..
Land of Hope and Glory, Jerusalem Swing low Sweet Chariot (maybe not recognisable to USA but anywhere that plays Rugby Union will recognise this!) Anything by Oasis?
Anything by Noel Coward or Flanders and Swann. Also songs like Liverpool Lou or Maggie May and then there's loads of traditional folk songs that are very British. Look for songs by the Copper family or the Watersons.
I would say Beatles, Queen.. music that is famous around the world for being associated with UK ..and austin powers of course
As has already been mentioned, Oasis would be a good choice. If you're looking for other bands who 'sound English' (i.e. sing in unmistakably thick northern accents) you could try The Verve or the Stone Roses.
Thanks a lot people, lots of good hints! I am playing this music during a fair here in the US and I'm showing British goods, in case you wonder! And I thought that some nice British music would be the perfect background! So, I've got the anthems and a lot of the Beatles', I guess I'll throw in some of the rest too. Queen, absolutely. Land of hope and glory, fine. But Austin Powers is a great idea! Actually, I just realized that I left out Rule Britannia! Oasis, yeah. What about Robbie Williams? Too international? Any sort of 'Royal' music that you can think of? Thanks very very much for your help! Very appreciated!
"God Save the Queen" by the Sex Pistols. Greensleeves is about as British as you can get. That's royal - Henry VIII was supposed to have composed it.
