I'm about to register a domain for a new site and I'm curious on the following:

Does the TLD affect your possible positioning in Google. IE, if a site is setup as a .com vs. a .co.uk how would that effect you in Google?

    Your comments are much appreciated.

There is many other factors that are more important than just TLD.
Anyway IMO if everthing is same .co.uk will rake better in www.google.co.uk (provided users has selected to show pages from the UK

I would assume the same for .ca on google.ca, etc. Important to me is whether .co.uk would hurt in my google.com search ranking or should I only think about registering .com?

Earlier Google would give some weightage to a tld, now they don't
