tld, subdomains or subdirectory?

    Hi All,
I've been doing web searches, but I haven't been able to find what I'm looking for:confused: . I hope you guys can offer me some enlightenment.

I am starting a ecommerce store. My company is based in Canada. However, I expect a lot of my sales to come from the US. I would like to set up two separate areas: 1) a site that shows Canadian dollars. Payments would be processed in Canadian dollars. 2) a site that shows US dollars. Payments would be processed in US dollars. Thus, one site that displayed different currencies would not meet my needs.

I'm not sure how to go about this. I could have two different domains: www.example.com and www.example.ca. I plan to host them on the same host (based in US) due to budget constraints mainly (though I would be open to hosting them on two separate hosts in the future- one Canadian and one American - if you guys think this is a good idea). Surfers would be able to switch to the American site from the Canadian site by clicking on an icon and vice versa.

My question is what is the best option for SEO? Should I use subdomains or subdirectories instead? Also, how do different do you think I should I make the American and Canadian sites in order to lessen the chance that my sites will be penalized by Google (the sites will sell the same products). Also, by using different TLDs for my site, would one site cause the PR of the other site to go down?

    Thanks,
    Julie
