TLD important for national search?

    Hello,

I had a little search about this on the web and forum but didn't really got my answer. Is it possible to get (good) ranking as a foreign website in another country?

So let's say I'm Dutch and I'd like to have a Dutch keyword with a foreign (german domainname). Can someone tell me what the result will be? Is there any good chance it will rank high or will it always be low?

I'm not sure if you're saying you want to rank with a tld different to the country you're targeting - if so that's a real problem.
I've just checked in WebMaster tools, and if you've got a country specific tld, you don't even get the option of changing your geo-targeting

I've seen Baidu extremely easy to game on this front, but not sure about Google.

I did saw that in Webmaster Tools indeed. So what's stronger, a good domainname or correct tld? (both I guess but tld is pretty sold out)

if you are geo targetting, then it is very helpfull to have a regional TLD. for example, if you are marketing solely to german visitors, then domain.de would be better than domain.com or net. you can setup geo targetting within your webmaster tool but regional domain has its own advantage. german people who are searching on google will more likelike click on the .de domain than .com thinking that .de will give them regional and more relevant result

Yeah, it's possible to rank a foreign website in another country, but you will need to build more links with the anchor text to that site.

But if you can buy the domain name from the country you want to target and get a few links links from sites from the same country (IP of the country or domain from that country) you will achieve the same rankings with less links.

Thanks all, so if I understand correctly; It is possible to rank in another country but you need some more power to get up in the ranking. Thx!

If your domain tld is related to any nation, where you would like to promote then it would be great. Because you will get automatically geo location targeting for that area.
