I have googled about this already but nowhere could I see the exact difference between these 2 tags. .

Everywhere they say the same thing.. eg
    http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2007/12/using-alt-attributes-smartly.html
    http://www.searchenginejournal.com/image-alt-text-vs-image-title-whats-the-difference/6930/

    etc

Does anyone know what exactly is the difference ?
Basically I want to know -
    - which one should we use - alt or title . both shows the message on tooltip lik box on mouse over. .correct ?

alt tags doesn't work in firefox.

The problem is that the authors of Internet Explorer made an error in their implementation of the HTML specification (HTML was not invented by Microsoft, but by a completely independent entity)

alt and title tags are 2 different things
one is the alternate text to display if image does not display where the image would display
where the title tag is the just that the title key for the link or image and does not display without a mouse over

ALT works fine with FireFox without any issue. Also, ALT and title are different. ALT text will be displayed if image is not available. Title works as a tooltip (which provides additional information about your image).
