Well I agree that every page should add something worthwhile to the site/be about a specific topic. Page 2, 3... of the same article isn't a good idea. However if you have multiple websites in the same niche or sell links, having more pages is great to link to other sites. Plus if each page is specific about a certain topic and your website/homepage already has a lot of traffic you will get backlinks to the interior pages. And google loves backlinks to interior pages of the website. It's how it assigns sitelinks to some sites in the SERPS.
