Title attribute in text links

    Hi everyone.

I always thought that the title attribute could help in a link. For instance, when you have a link that's on a single word in a text. Somehow it's a good way to add information on a link, or add a description...

Yesterday, a colleague told me that there isn't any proof whatsoever that this can help for the SEO, even it can help the visitor for sure. He added that in some cases, it can also be considered as spam.

Maybe it just doesn't hure but doesn't help. I always used this technique and my websites are all well positioned... well I think ;)

What do you guys have to say about that?

    Thanks a lot.

There is no proof for most of the seo techniques people use.

The title tag is often useful for the users so I use it. In particular I use it to give firefox users a description when they hover over an image.

Its not spam, just use it to help your visitors.

Yes, very useful for images. I guess it'd be spam if someone abuses of it and puts a list of keywords in it, but since Google ignores it...

They don't seem to ignore it as much as I thought. It seems if you take time to do nice clean <title> and meta tags it will pay off as I get a lot of search engine traffic from Google doing this. However, what works on one search engine might not work on another.. and vice versa. I play it safe and code my sites in a round about manner that will work what I feel perfectly throughout every search engine without trying to annoy my visitors.

This post is about the title attribute, not the title element. Anyway, I think it has some effect on rankings but veyr minor compared to anchor text.

I have no hardcore proof, but I believe a title attribute works, just in a much less way than other techniques. Say that a title is 15% ranking, content 10%, links titles 15%, amount of links/link pr 15% and a title attribute just 5%, it's much harder to notice than the other SEO techniques.

You should just try it out for yourself.
