1. Many spiritual sources say it is good to practice Tithing because it creates positive Karma, and even clears Karmic debt. 2. Some say putting money to support our own life's work (e.g. business) will increase our abundance. 3. Some say spending money itself is already a form of giving. Abraham Hicks says: "Now, let’s talk about that subject of “tithing†for just a moment. A lot of people ask about tithing, because they have been told that there is benefit in it. And they’re usually told that by those who will receive the benefit from their tithing. In other words, “tithing is a good thing, give your money to me and your life will be better,†is the general picture of tithing. The reason that tithing is beneficial is because, if you feel abundant enough that you have excess that you don’t have to have — the excess is a vibration of Well-being. In other words, “I’ve not only got enough money for what I need, I have extra money,†and so, it’s that vibration of Well-being that allows more dollars to flow. So we encourage that you “tithe†your clothing account, that you “tithe†your vacation account, that you “tithe†your eating-at-a-special-restaurant account. In other words, you don’t have to tithe a church or a guru. Tithe yourself, but get into the attitude of excess. In other words, “not only can I meet my basic requirements, but I have excess that I can do other things with,†because it’s that vibration of abundance, that vibration of excess." So what are you views on Tithing vs Spending vs Putting money in life's work (e.g. business, advertising, promotion)? I would like to find out different views from people about this.
Tithing is commonly understood as giving an amount (literally 10%) of your income to charity. As for your post, it is hard to follow what you are saying but it sounds like you are suggesting that rather than give to the less fortunate through a charity, one should keep the money themselves and give (tithe) it to their "clothing account, or their "vacation account", or their ,"eating-at-a-special-restaurant account" and not give to the less fortunate. That sounds like just keeping all your money yourself and has nothing to do with being charitable or tithing. Suggesting that instead of giving to charity one should give themselves a vacation seems or that spending in general is as good as giving to charity is an odd position to take. I am struggling to understand that concept of turning something that is a charitable gift into giving oneself a gift. I guess I just don't get it.
Not sure I'd agree with the 'charity' part of your post. I'd say that a tithe was more a means of supporting the church...as can be see in 1 Corinthians 16. Also, some of the earliest groups of Christians sold everything they had and held the proceeds in common to be used, not for charitable works, but for the furtherance of the Gospels.
I don't read the bible so I wouldn't know about that citation. My understanding is that in many religions some of the people, Muslims, Jews, Christians, Mormons, each do something similar to giving a percentage of their earnings and it is usually given to the poor, or charity, or the church or mosque to support the poor or those in need.
You should. It's highly entertaining. ...well that's the theory anyway. One thing is for sure...the Church wouldn't be as rich as it is if it was giving all it's money to the poor and needy.
It really is mind boggling to think that one outfit from Rome is worth about a trillion dollars in precious art, antiquities, worldwide real estate holdings and liquid assets (cash). All from selling tickets to heaven in the early years (indulgences), curing an invisible spiritual plague that they invented (original sin) and their secret weapon, guilt while passing the collection plate. They don't use the word "tithing", but do pass out contribution envelopes to registered parishioners and give guidelines on how those same people can fulfill their "duty" as church members.
Hm. giving on a regular basis, either through effort or money does make you feel better. At least that is my experience. You can find it throughout literature and news. OTOH, you walk into certain "houses of worship" and they are so rich and abundant and some religious institutions simply reek of money. Frankly that is different. Its money going into the institution. Frankly I don't see the value in that. Of course if I were the head of a religion I'd be damn sure to make sure all my followers thought that was the golden road to salvation.
When you account for the value of my time, a small fortune. My most recent haunt is The Daily Beast. The place is a loony bin, badly in need of my not so delicate sensibilities.
Nonsense. My time is worth at least a dollar an hour, maybe more. Besides, if Romney is in bed with half the Wall St. corporate raiders and big banks liberals claim he is, he shouldn't need my money. Yah, what he said!
Spending is also a form of giving. It circulates the flow of energy. It contributes to the good of society and supports the work of others. "To increase the flow of money, you must exercise your ability to spend it. This is no different from increasing physical energy by exercising your body. Pinching your dollar to save money is like staying physically inactive to conserve energy. Some would say this makes sense, that to increase money one must stop spending it freely, and to increase physical energy one must conserve it. However, in the long run this leads to nothing less than atrophy. Some would say it is paradoxical that in order to increase physical energy one must expend it – but that is precisely what’s needed. Exercise increases your capacity to generate and handle a greater amount of physical energy. Likewise, by exercising your ability to spend money without reservation, you increase your capacity for handling greater flows of money and so flow naturally increases. What the Matrix tells us is once again backwards from the truth. You increase money by spending it." - Montalk.net "When you spend to progress, you prosper." - Cassiopaean Transcripts
I've always wondered why that book is not treated with the disdain a lot of its content warrants. If all of the bad ideas, depictions of atrocious human behavior and downright horror found throughout, were looked at objectively, it would be sold wrapped in brown paper from under the counter.
Ah...but you see. All the atrocious behaviour in the Bible is sanctioned by 'God' ...so that makes it all right. Hell, come to think of it, most of the atrocious behaviour in the Bible is CARRIED OUT by 'God'.
Further acknowledgement that you have not contributed one "red cent" to the campaign of your "main man" Mitzi. You are saving a lot of dough. That reminds me, my offer for tutoring still stands. It does involve real money though, not that ..."value" of your time stuff. And with my tutoring, the use of real facts and your self acknowledged you might actually accomplish something worthwhile.
