Make sure that you are using same structure for the headings tags, and meta tags also placed in the same way as they were in the old template. Also make sure that keywords placement must remain same. All I know this. Do correct me if I'm wrong. I'm also looking for some better answers. Regards.
I think if you will just change the theme and nothing else it will not have any adverse effect unless you also change your url structure or any onpage elements. Though it has been said that it will affect your visitors, just monitor you're analytics and try to analyze the data.
You should superiority on your web quality content. But don't make any duplicate content. It may fall down your PR.
You can change your theme, but do not disturb any on page elements as long as they are working fine. Pay attention to the url structure also, as that too might cause a fall in rankings.
