I know a fair few sites that find a left verticle banner to make them the most, it depends greatly on the layout and type of content.

Though Like already said, most of them are unhelpful and wrong for a lot of people.

From my personal experience this is what I have learned from the Adsense:-

1) Forget about placing Adsense Ads if you have a traffic < 1000 This is just silly - It's like saying, "Don't start a business until the business brings X$ of income. It doesn't make sense...

2) Only 336 works within the content. Place it in a DIV with flowing text around. There's no single factor that makes automatically works. Different sites achieve different results for the same thing.
3) The vertical sidebar ads never gets clicked See #2
4) Randomize the Ad position every now and then, this increases the CTR
5) Links SHOULD be blue. Forget about blending See #2
6) Ads should have no borders. It should blend with the background See #2
7) Never read and get disappointed with others adsense earnings. They are not true I don't believe you either...
8) Never buy Adsense secret tips books. They don't know any better than you. I have mixed feelings about this one. On one hand, I don't feel like there's a guru out there who has a 'magic bullet' that will automatically bring success (or if there is, you can bet he's not selling the secret). On the other hand, I consider my sites with adsense as a business. Part of business is learning how to run your business better that means continuous education. From that perspective, I can't see the harm in learning what someone thinks (that's what we're doing here, after all).
9) Never keep adsense filters. They will affect the smartpricing of adsense. you earn less if you keep them. I think one has nothing to do with the other
10) Always TARGET ads using section-targetting of adsense. There are some site formats where this is good advice (like long blog main pages).

The bottom line is nobody has all the answers, or if they do they're keeping them to themselves. If you want to know how effective a certain ad block or color scheme is on your site - try it! Keep up with your results and go with what works best for you.

Treat adsense as a business. That means learn about it. Read the TOS and stay compliant to them. Add quality content to attract high paying ads and traffic. Find out what's working for you and focus on that. The same as any business...
