    Hey Everyone,

Choosing the correct keywords is vital to the success of your online business. Below are two methods to show you how.

    1) Find the best keyword or group of keywords that will capture your reader's attention. There are often hundreds of words to pick from and the successful marketer must know precisely which phrases have the most people hunting for them and the most potential buyers.

    2) Select a suitable keyword tool. There are many on the market to help you with your choices. Some are free and some are not, but most of them work in the same way:

    (i) First choose a word that represents what you want to sell. For instance if you want to sell golf equipment you would start with the word "golf".

(ii) Enter golf into the tool of choice, push a button and up pops any number of words related to golf. For instance, golf, golf equipment, golf shoes and so on.

(iii) Continue to narrow the choices down until you get 4 or 5 words most closely related to your product.

    3) Once you have chosen your words, start working on such things as how many clicks a month the words gets. You need to have enough searches for your product to make it worth your while to spend time on selling.

    4) Compare how many competing pages contain that word on Google. If there are too many pages with your selections on them, you'll never get your articles or website recognized.

    5) Look for the numbers. Most marketers feel that your keyword- or group of keywords should have at least 1500 people searching for them in any given month. For Google-competing pages, successful marketers think there should be less than 500,000. And in title pages, there should be less than 10,000 to make you competitive.

    6) Start using your keywords. Once this information is gathered together and meets your criteria, you have your keywords and/or phrases.

    Hope It Helps
    Thanks:cool:

Are you sure about the 500,000 number? It seems a bit high - I thought it was more like 30,000 , as per Market Samurai Golden Rules?.

Thanks for the tips, but I'm not really sure about you mentioned about 500k Google competition pages. The golden rules of Market Samurai seemed to be like at least 30k or something.

I have used Google's free keyword tool and it looks great until now. It gives me a lot of results to know which keywords shall I use. But I also consider some of the best paid keyword tools like Keyword Winner and Market Samurai with the golden rule of 30k in my previous post here. The numbers are very important in terms of global and local monthly volume searches.

I agree with Geek4sharem, sometimes numbers don't tell you the whole story. Sometimes 30K competition can be tougher than another niche where competition is lets say 100K. It depends on the quality of competition. If the first page of 500K competition has Ezinearticles, Squidoo, or Hubpages then probably you can rank relatively easily. So, 30K is more of a guideline not writing on the stone.

The competition numbers doesn't matter as much as how tough the sites on Google's first page (10 sites) will be to beat. Only about 10% of those search numbers ever reach the second page of the SERP's. The number of backlinks a site has plays a major role in getting a high ranking, while you can get ranked without backlinks having a lot of backlinks makes it a lot easier. It also makes the competition tougher to beat.

To gauge the competition on the first page use MarketSamurai or the free version of TrafficTravis, it'll show you the number of backlinks and how well SEO'd the competing are. If you're using the Firefox browser you can download the SEOQuake addon to get a quick snapshot of the backlinks.
