A photograph will compress and retain quality better as a jpg.

A block of flat colour will compress and retain quality better as a gif.

    I hope that simplifies it.

Well I have some GIF that has 1500*1500 res with less than 1Mb in size. I think I have some, but it's seep down in my HD. Kindda lazy to find it. Maybe when I've stumbled across it some time, I'll put it on an attachment.

Heck, I'm not saying that GIF is better than JPG. Your statement about "Jpg is usually the best image format for images between those sizes." is also true, with the emphasis on "usually", not "always".

What I STONGLY disagree are these statement:
    - ONLY use JPG when building website
    - JPG compression is the best
    - JPG done better in SEO

So, basically what I'm saying that you should never taken GIF and PNG away from your consideration when building a website.
