I had mentioned something similar beforehand. Now, I wanted to share this with you guys. I learnt a LOT from you, and here is something that NOONE on this forum mentioned. Coz you guys are more like experts, and you know a LOT about the Internet and webmaster stuff, but there is one thing that few pple would experience: I am a PhD student specializing an area of science. And I created two websites, one is about a very "narrow" area of science where I am specializing in. The only things I wrote was to give some info about basic programs in that specialization. Now, here are the main points: 1. I get around 40% CTR with this page. Almost half of the people who visit my page click on my ads!! 2. And each ad pays around 60 cents (sometimes above 1 dollar) 3. But I have like only 20 visitors a day. This is prolly because the site is quite new right now. Once I start to have more visitors, the revenue will be awesome. Now, what I think is: When you create sites like this focusing a very specialized area, the ads are very very related. And pple who visit your site have nothing to do with computers. They are simplly students. So they click, and they are anot ad blind as pple who visit forums, webmaster related stuff etc. So, almost half of the visitors click. And since there are VERY FEW pages that specialize on the same topic and put ads too, the ad competition becomes high and it pays well, even though Google's stated ad-competition for those ads does not look so high. Hope this works for pple who are planning to open new sites!! The summary is "don't always open sites about the same stuff like forums, computers, webmaster info.; open sites about something pple focusing on which would NOT know how to open.
It's called a niche website. Many of us here who are exerts in smaller fields operate websites like this. Congratulations though. Focus on more content and more visitors and you're on your way.
Hey cianuro, Thanks for that info!! I didn't know a "niche" site is what it is even though I heard this quite a lot of times on this forum.
First off, it's spelled "noobie" or "newbie", I've never seen nebie. That would be pronounced "neb e". Anyways, thanks for the info. I wish I could get the URL to your website.
Hey, u r so readily criticizing spelling man!! U r talking to someone who got 6 out of 6 on GRE writing!!! "Nebie" is just a typo, which always happens when u type fast!!
( i think it's spelled 'n00b' ) And yes, niche is VERY important.. But choosing a niche simply to chase the money is generally not a good idea (can you say MFA?).. Make a quality site about something you know, and add lots of quality content.. If you're lucky you may stumble into a niche that pays well like Vex did..
Congrats on your success, I wish you the best, but let me clarify something, how can you be a PhD student and misspell so many words? I am not trying to be rude, but are you freaggin kidding me? I guess test results aren't reflecting or they did something wrong when gradind the test. Good luck bro! Ed
If u don't care 'bout spellin' like I am doin' now, den u do luts of spelling errors. N seriously who kaerz most 'bout spelling r nonnative spealerz!! Resurch showz dis!! N teenagerz spell wrongly on purpose, just to b KOOL!
OK, as for the replies from others who are less obsessed with spelling, yeah, thanx a LOT guys!! Seriously!!.. I heard that word "niche" many times, but I've just learnt what it means!! Once the semester break comes, I will go create many many such sites. Hehe, I luv my niche!! Coz it is my own area of specialization!!
Niche was mentioned a lot of times in this forum. However you can have a general website and still get specialised ads if you use section targeting.
He did say he was PhD student in science and he has created sites on those topics, so he is probably very knowledgable on this subject.
Yeah, actually, the original reason I created those sites was just to have a say in the field! I had originally never thought of earning money from them. But now, I am doing that too!
Just remember that once you get from 20 visits a day to 1,000, don't expect your revenue to jump by the same proportion. If you are working a small niche, you are probably working with a small amount of advertisers as well. You will get to know what their monthly budgets are quite quickly!
What a funny title: Experts wouldn't know this!! Experts have known this for a long time and "niche" is the keyword.
It's still worth repeating though. Look at the breakdown of sites in most directories - you'll find that other directories, computer and internet sites, and sites that are basically internet based such as flash games or shopping sites hugely outnumber 'normal' sites about science, language, geography, history, art, whatever - but those will be the sites that lots of 'normal' people are looking at. A timely reminder of where we should focus our attention is always welcome
Totally off topic: Vex, people will take you a lot more seriously if you do spell correctly, especially if you can. You are not a teenager any more. And research shows that people will understand what you write, even if you make spelling mistakes. But it also shows that people will understand what you write faster, if you do spell correctly.
