Tips for Writing Your CV : Writing your way to a new career

We have all been here. You were sitting behind your desk, your monitor was burning out your eyes, your coffee was stone cold and beginning to show another sign of life and your butt was numb from sitting on your chair all day, yet you still didn't manage to find the right words to complete your CV.

Nothing can be more frustrating and frankly disheartening, than not being able to say what you want in the right way to a potential employer. Here, I have collaberated a few of my favorite tips to help you get the best possible CV out to your new potential employer!

    1. Never keep starting sentences with 'I'.
When writing about yourself it is difficult not to keep using 'I' at the beginning of your sentences, as you are describing what you are like and who you are as a person. Instead try taking elements from the middle of the sentence and combining them at the front. Here's an example.

"I am an easy going yet hard working individual, with a plethora of different skills. I have learnt a lot from my degree and will use this knowledge to become the best I can be"

As you can see I have started two sentences with 'I' next to one another, so here is how I would rectify the problem.

"I am an easy going yet hard working individual, with a plethora of different skills. Having completed a degree, I have learnt a lot about my industry and will use this knowledge to become the best I can be"

I have still used the 'I have' phrase but have placed it later in the sentence so that it doesn't stand out as being repetitive.

    2. Always try to make sure you spell everything correctly!
This sounds so obvious but it's so important as lack of spelling correction can be picked up by a potential employer and can be reflected against you in a negative way.

    3. Be honest. Only use elaborate words if you are used to using them.
One problem that I often find is that people who don't often explore the wide vocabulary we have will use fancy words in the wrong context, which could ultimately come across in a negative way to an potential employer! Also, if you don't often use large words, it's best not to add too many in as CV's are as much of an reflection of your skills as they are a reflection of you as a person. Let your true self shine out! (Within reason though guys)

    4. Remember that less is more!
You don't have to write lines and lines content to have a good CV. In fact, more often than not, the more simplistic your writing the easier it is to read and the less daunting it may be to your potential employer.

    5. Correct use of there and their!
One of the most common mistakes is the wrong of their and there! Here is an example!

"During my role at the aquarium, their was often a lot of cleaning and maintaining to be done."

    This needs to be :

"During my role at the aquarium, there was often a lot of cleaning and maintaining to be done."

The reason being is that there is often a place, and their is an association with someones belongings!

Although the previous mistakes come across as really obvious, it is very easy to forget them when trying to write your C.V. I hope that some of these tips may have helped you or jogged your memory. Thank you for reading!
