Tips for writing an effective title

Dan do you think that pipe is better then ( , ) and ( - ) ? I'm asking this b'coz I heard that , is much more better then pipe

 

Thinking back to DOS 3.1 when I was not older than dirt. | is a pipe? I'm pretty sure but I bet a lot have no idea what you meant.

 

SEO wise there's no real difference, but the pipe can improve the readability of the title tag's contents in the browser.

Yes, | is the pipe. And believe it or not, I was given a PC running DOS 3.1 in 2005. How scary is that?

 

Hmm not quite as scary as used underwear but close. LOL I think the key word being GIVEN to you says it all. But I'd take it.

I thought its better to make very short titles (6 - 8 words) in order to make every word powerful. I see that people are talking about very long titles.
Can you tell me what is better?

Short titles - this is one of the few areas where keyword density becomes an issue (mainly because users expect to see short titles that they can just skim over to find what they want to know).

To write a title I usually target no more than 2 or 3 search terms. I try to have the terms related to each other so they can fit in a sentence together and not look like just a list of search terms. In most cases I place the site title at the end with a pipe used to separate the site title. I have found this strategy to be very effective for both SEO and keeping a professional look in the search results when the site is displayed in the results.
